Kirkus Best Books of 2012 for Young Adults

I am beyond thrilled to know that GIRL MEETS BOY was selected as one of Kirkus Book Reviews Best Books of 2012 for Teens.  Also among the honored Kirkus authors were Andrew Smith, A.S. King, Martha Brockenbrough and Lauren Oliver -- and each have a story in my upcoming Chronicle YA anthology, RIPPEROLOGY.  Thank you so much, Kirkus, for seeing something special in GIRL MEETS BOY.  I am thrilled.

It's also nominated for a 2012 Cybil.  How cool is that?

Thanks, Reading Junky!

There are two sides to every story.  The stories in GIRL MEETS BOY show readers both sides in six very different relationships.

Kelly Milner Halls is both the editor of this thought-provoking collection and also a story contributor.  Halls assembled a star-studded cast of YA authors for this group of stories.  The list includes Chris Crutcher, Terry Trueman, James Howe, Cynthia Leitich Smith, Ellen Wittlinger, and Joseph Bruchac to name a few.

Each pair of stories includes the girl's point of view and the boy's.  Once both sides of the story are revealed, readers will realize everything isn't always what it seems.  Unlikely couples, two boys exploring the idea that they both like boys, combinations that work, and some that don't combine to mirror real-world relationships.  Life is complicated and these authors offer a peek into just how complicated it can be.

The Whole Teen Library Handbook...

...published by ALA Editions and edited by Karen Jensen and Heather Booth will include an essay written by yours truly about reaching reluctant readers with nonfiction.  It was a real joy writing the piece, and I'm grateful to be included.  It should be available later this year, 2013.

I love YA literature!

There, I said it,.  I've loved YA lit since I took a job as the executive editor of Kids Reads (part of the Book Reporter Network) many years ago.  Teen Reads was part of Kids Reads at the time.  As the executive editor, I was expected to review ten books a week (yikes!), including two YA novels.  It didn't take long for me to realize, YA books were the compelling, quick paced books I'd been looking for, for my own reading enjoyment.  For ten years I didn't try to write YA.  Most people know me for the quirky, high interest nonfiction I write for middle grade readers.  And I love that work and those kids.  But a part of me wanted to try YA.

In January of 2012, Chronicle Books gave me that chance when they published GIRL MEETS BOY.

What is GIRL MEETS BOY?  It's a collection of 6 story pairs -- he said/she said stories.  In other words, one writer tells the girl's story.  The other tells the same story from a guy's point of view.

I've been YA author Chris Crutcher's assistant for almost twelve years now..  So he was kind enough to write with me for the first pair.  Then I matched other writers with their partners and they made magic. Check out the duos here:

Chris Crutcher/Kelly Milner Halls
Joseph Bruchac/Cynthia Leitich Smith
James Howe/Ellen Wittlinger
Terry Trueman/Rita Williams-Garcia
Terry Davis/Rebecca Fjelland Davis
Randy Powell/Sara Ryan

Kirkus gave GIRL MEETS BOY a starred review.  They also named it one of the Best YA Books of 2012, and I'm grateful.

Next will be RIPPEROLOGY, a second anthology of short stories by today's best authors -- each inspired by the infamous serial killer, Jack the Ripper.  Read more it below.

Terry Davis and I are working on a third anthology about teen battles with mental health issues. And I'm working on two novels of my own.

I hope you like GIRL MEETS BOY,. I hope you will like RIPPEROLOGY when it's released in October of 2013.  And if you're curious about my nonfiction work, check out my other website to see the Wonders of Weird.

Onward!  Adventures await us!  LOTS OF THEM!  I can't wait.

Kelly

What's Next? RIPPEROLOGY

Picture
From 3 April 1888 to 13 February 1891, the poverty stricken East End Whitechapel district of London was targeted by a blood thirsty predator.  Five murders were attributed to the killer, who called himself Jack the Ripper (aka Leather Apron) in his infamous letter to the Central News Agency.  But other slayings could have been the work of the same brutal madman.
Who was this elusive serial killer, never caught or unequivocally identified?  Who were his victims? Who were the people who tried to put an end to the slaughter?  And who were the people forever changed by the man behind the mayhem?

The intimate details have escaped the annals of history, but not the imaginations of today’s finest young adult authors.  Though thirteen unique short stories, RIPPEROLOGY will re-examine Jack the Ripper, some via surprising new lights, settings, mediums and formats.
